S Club 7

British pop outfit S Club has confirmed they have split by releasing a statement.
The band - Jo O'Meara, Tina Barrett, Rachel Stevens, Hannah Spearritt, Jon Lee and Bradley McIntosh - had made a live announcement on stage at London's Docklands Arena last night, 21 April 2003.
The statement reads, "With any job there comes a time to move on and to face new challenges. We've had a fantastic four years in S Club. We've experienced so much more than we ever imagined and we've enjoyed a huge amount of success."
"We can't thank each and every one of our fans enough for their constant support and we hope that they will continue to support and understand us in our decision."
Their junior doppelgangers S Club Juniors expressed their sadness at the split. They said, "We'll miss S Club a lot. We are so grateful for everything they've taught us."
The British teen-pop band S Club 7 was created in 1999 by pop impresario Simon Fuller, who chose the group's seven members -- Rachel Stevens, Hannah Spearritt, Bradley McIntosh, Paul Cattermole, Jon Lee, Jo O'Meara and Tina Barrett -- from nearly 10,000 hopefuls. S Club 7 then recorded their debut album S Club and began work on a BBC series, Miami 7, which featured the band as an aspiring group living in Florida; it became the top-rated kids' program in the UK around the time their debut single "Bringing It All Back" climbed to the top of the UK charts. The show debuted in the US on the Fox Family Channel in the fall of 1999 and S Club made its way States-side in early 2000. That year, S Club 7 also won a Brit award for Best British Newcomer.
S Club 7 is now S CLub because Paul went out...

Super Fresh

เนื้อเพลง : Superman

I can’t stand to fly
I’m not that naive
I’m just out to find
The better part of me

I’m more than a bird…I’m more than a plane
More than some pretty face beside a train
It’s not easy to be me

Wish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie
About a home I’ll never see

It may sound absurd…but don’t be naive
Even Heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed…but won’t you concede
Even Heroes have the right to dream
It’s not easy to be me

Up, up and away…away from me
It’s all right…You can all sleep sound tonight
I’m not crazy…or anything…

I can’t stand to fly
I’m not that naive
Men weren’t meant to ride
With clouds between their knees

I’m only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me

It’s not easy to be me

Sugababes

Official Group Biography
Sugababes are Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena, and Heidi Range; three music-loving young girls - Mutya and Keisha being from London, and Heidi from Liverpool. The three girls have been dubbed the faces of intellectual, soulful pop music in a chart filled with bland, artificial music. Previous to their current line-up, Sugababes consisted of Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan Donaghy. "We've been together for four years now. Keisha and I have known each other since we were eight because we went to primary school together. We met Siobhan at a party when we were thirteen. Siobhan then met our manager Ron Tom through her cousin. He then put us in the studio and we did some demos, which he took to different record companies and we were signed by London Records," says Mutya.

Siobhan Donaghy left the group after they had released four singles from their debut album, which they co-wrote - "One Touch." The reason for the departure of Siobhan has never been officially revealed, although reports suggest she left because she was more interested in rock/indie music instead of the soulful pop Mutya and Keisha were interested in. Other reports suggest that Siobhan left to pursue a career in fashion. Whichever, it seems Siobhan backed out from telling Mutya and Keisha directly, opting for a cover-up of "going to the toilet" and never returning, telling their manager that she had left. However, determined not to be disheartened by Siobhan's departure, Mutya and Keisha, the two original Sugababes, held auditions and recruited a new member in the shape of Heidi Range - who was a member of the band which later evolved into Atomic Kitten. Unfortunately for Mutya and Keisha, who had just formed a new-look Sugababes, London Records, their record company, dropped them and refused to invest any more money into the Sugababes project, citing poor record sales as their reason ("One Touch" failed to crack America, and their UK singles reached the lower parts of the top 15).

Sugababes were not disheartened, and were signed up by Universal/Island records, who also have Shaggy on their books, which was a major factor the Sugababes considered before they signed up! "The Word" - a track the girls recorded whilst still signed to London, was deemed suitable for the comeback single they needed to re-establish themselves around the world. However, when in the studio, it was suggested that a club "mash-up" consisting of Adina Howard's "Freak Like Me" vocals mixed with Gary Numan's "R Friends Electric" should be recorded officially by the Sugababes. Richard X mixed the track, and the "We Don't Give A Damn Mix" of "R Freaks Electric" was sent out and rotated in clubs instead of the previous "mash-up." The track was decidedly the first single and the comeback release the Sugababes needed. A dark video showing the initiation of Heidi was made, and sent out to TV channels, and a more commercial radio mix was sent out to radio. On release, "Freak Like Me" by the Sugababes went straight to the top of the UK charts.

The new deal gives the girls more freedom. "I don't know if our personalities were coming across before but now I think we're getting a chance to do that," says Keisha. "You would never think that I'm really really bubbly and a kind of Jim Carrey pulling faces type girl, and that Mutya's quite fresh, and obviously there's plenty of personality on Heidi, and now I think we're getting a chance to show all of that." The future of the Sugababes is set - after the release of the second single, "Round, Round" which also went straight to #1, and "Angels With Dirty Faces" - their more autobiographical second album featuring new songs, such as "Shape," a duet with Sting, "Virgin Sexy," "More Than A Million Miles," "Just Don't Need This" and "Stronger."

Steve Vai

Steve Vai, born Steven Siro Vai, is an American guitarist and composer, born June 6th, 1960 in Long Island, New York (making him six years old on the sixth day of the sixth month in 1966, as he noted in the introduction to his guitar transcription book of Frank Zappa). Vai is best known for his self-composed, performed and produced guitar instrumental music, but he has also played on the recordings of several other rock acts.

Steve Vai made his name playing 'stunt guitar' with the legendary rock performer, composer, music producer, and publishing mogul Frank Zappa. In the early 80's he replaced Yngwie Malmsteen (a good friend) as lead guitarist in Graham Bonnett's Alcatrazz. Then he joined former Van Halen front man David Lee Roth's group to record the albums Eat 'em and Smile and Skyscraper. Vai also stepped into guitarist Adrian Vandenberg's shoes to record with British rock legends Whitesnake (after Adrian Vandenberg injured his wrist due to some exercises he found in a book and tried out) shortly before recording was due to begin for the album Slip of the Tongue.

Steve Vai continues to tour regularly, both with his own group and with his one time teacher and fellow Grammy award winning guitar instrumentalist friend Joe Satriani (on the G3 series of tours). Steve recently teamed up with former David Lee Roth band member Bassist Billy Sheehan for a world tour. G3 2003 features Steve, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen.

Steve Vai's music has featured in a number of feature films, including Dudes, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and Ghosts of Mars. He appeared onscreen in the 1986 Ralph Macchio vehicle Crossroads, playing the demonically-inspired Jack Butler. At the film's climax, Vai engages in a guitar duel with Macchio (with Ry Cooder dubbing Macchio's part). The 32nd note quick tempo pseudo-classical-baroque track (entitled Eugene's Trick Bag) with which Macchio wins the competition was composed by Vai, heavily based on Paganini's Caprice Op. 1 # 5, and has become a favorite apprentice-piece among many guitar students. Vai received a Grammy Award in 1991.

Where Vai's contributions to others' material has been constrained by the largely rock or heavy-rock style of those bands, his own material is considerably more esoteric. Vai is an accomplished studio producer (he owns two: 'The mother ship' and 'The harmony hut') and his own recordings combine his signature guitar prowess with novel compositions and considerable use of studio and recording effects.

Steve Vai owns 'Favored Nations', a recording and publishing business which specialises in looking after both newly discovered and already high profile recording artists from around the world.

Vai is married with two children (Julian Angel & Fire) to Pia (former Bassist of All-Female Group 'Vixen', which can be seen in the movie 'Hardbodies'). He also enjoys keeping bees, which regularly produce a crop of honey that Steve sells for his chosen charity every year through his web site.

Vai also helped design his signature Ibanez JEM series of guitars. They feature a handgrip cut into the top of the body of the guitar. They also use a humbucker-single coil-humbucker pickup set-up and a locking tremolo bar.

Stereophonics

Stuart Cable (Drums),
Kelly Jones (Vocals, Guitars)
Richard Jones (Bass).

"Jones’s voice is a killer instrument too, simultaneously raw and mellow, while his lyrics nail the disdain, boredom and affection inherent in small-town life." Q on Kelly Jones.

"On tunes such as ‘Not Up To You’ his drum patterns breathe life into the song and momentum into the show." The Times on Stuart Cable.

"...just like any other bass player - hanging back and looking cool." Richard Jones defines his role for Kerrang.

If there's a dictum that seems to follow Stereophonics wherever and whenever, it is 'Act local, think global'. Over the space of only four years, two albums, numerous singles and countless tours they have tirelessly made the most out of every opportunity presented to them.

Stereophonics are Kelly Jones (guitar, vocals), Richard Jones (bass) and Stuart Cable (drums). All three members were born and grew up in the South Wales village Cwmaman. Kelly and Stuart lived on the same street. Richard and Kelly were in the same class at school. Kelly was playing in bands with the older Stuart from the age of 11; a few years later Kelly and Stuart got Richard in the band because 'he was the coolest fucker in town.'

At the beginning of 1996, however, times were tough. Having been toiling for some time under the moniker of 'Tragic Love Company' (inspired by three of their favourite bands The Tragically Hip, Mother Love Bone and Bad Company) the band were, if not going nowhere, not going anywhere that fast. One name change - taken from Stuart Cable's antiquated radio set - and one year later, Stereophonics had signed a record and publishing deal, shared the stage with Manic Street Preachers and The Who, to name but a few, and released their debut single.

Stereophonics released their debut album in August 1997. 'Word Gets Around' entered the UK Charts at number 6, a result based on pure old-fashioned touring. During the course of the year the band racked up their first three top 40 hits ('More Life In A Tramp's Vest', 'A Thousand Trees' and 'Traffic'), yet none of them were awarded anything more than cursory National radio play. The music press were in the main responsive, but the band did not grace a magazine front cover until early '98.

By the time Stereophonics played their Christmas shows in Cardiff 'Word Gets Around' was certified Gold and has subsequently gone on to sell about a million copies world-wide. It's combination of Kelly Jones' inspired tragi-comic observations and rousing, triumphant tunes were summoned from a rich vein of rock'n'roll storytelling and connected immediately with an audience that covered generations, genders and cultural tribes. In February 1998 these marvellous fans voted Stereophonics the best new band of the year at the Brit Awards. Immediately, a re-release of fans' favourite 'Local Boy In The Photograph' became the band's highest chart entry, and finally the band were play-listed on National radio.

Spring '98 saw Stereophonics take their music abroad, with tours of Europe and USA. The band then interrupted the writing and recording of their second album with a headlining show in the grounds of Cardiff Castle (the first band to play this prestigious venue for over 20 years). The day after, Stuart broke his ankle playing football, but the band still managed to fulfil their commitment to play Glastonbury a few weeks later.

A summer of festival appearances at home and away in Europe were followed by the completion of recording, and a new single 'The Bartender And The Thief' came out in November 1998. With a video shot within view of the Bridge over the River Kwai in Thailand and a sensational sold out UK tour this raw, raucous song of con-men and lesbians reached number 3 in the UK charts - their highest yet.

In Spring 1999 Stereophonics released their second album, 'Performance And Cocktails'. The record was a further distillation of the band's simple, affirming music and Kelly Jones' idiosyncratic storytelling and it entered the charts at number one. With four more hits over the course of the year ('Just Looking', 'Pick A Part That's New', 'I Wouldn't Believe Your Radio' and 'Hurry Up And Wait'), the album has remained near the top of the album list for the last eighteen months.

In the Summer of 1999 Stereophonics co-headlined T In The Park in Scotland, and topped the bill at their own 50,000 capacity event at Swansea's Morfa Athletics stadium. The show sold out before the supporting cast were announced. With fans in attendance from all over the country and some hardy souls from even further afield the event was a truly moving send-off for the venue - it was bulldozed the next day.

1999 ended with a set of US dates, a sold out UK arena tour and a headlining billing at Cream in Liverpool on Millennium eve. Widely regarded as one of the albums of the year, 'Performance And Cocktails' was the fifth biggest-seller of 1999. The New Year started with another North American tour and another top 5 hit - this time a collaborative effort with Tom Jones. After a frenetic, non-stop two years, the band afforded themselves some quiet time (Richard moved to London, Stuart got married and bought a new house, Kelly set about writing the third album).

Summer 2000 saw Stereophonics decamp to Real World Studios in Bath to record their third long-player, breaking only to headline the Reading, Leeds and Glasgow three-site festival. Released 9th April 2001, the album entitled 'Just Enough Education To Perform' was exclusively previewed by Kelly Jones on his debut solo acoustic tour. After two solid years of supporting then mostly headlining the biggest venues in the country, Kelly seized the opportunity to showcase the band's newest songs in the purest form - Kelly, Richard, Tony and Scott have also just performed the acoustic tracks on a sold-out North American tour.

(At time of writing, 'Performance And Cocktails' is still in the UK album charts, and has been rated 4 times platinum and has sold more than 2 million worldwide. 'Word Gets Around' is currently not far short of double platinum status. A platinum disc is award for 300,000 album sales.)

Stacie Orrico

Stacie Orrico is no ordinary seventeen-year old. Ordinary seventeen-year olds don't rack up gold sales figures with her debut release and no mass media buzz. Stacie did. Her first album, Genuine, bowed at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, and has gone on to sell over 500,000 units.

Ordinary seventeen-year olds don't possess the brand of dynamic stage presence that can make an impression on Destiny's Child. Stacie did, and the Grammy-winning trio handpicked her to share the bill for dates on their tour.

And, most strikingly, ordinary seventeen-year olds don't possess both the vocal firepower and songwriting acumen found on the Virgin Records debut from this fresh new talent. Stacie does. And you can hear it in every note, every beat, and every word, of Stacie Orrico, beginning with her breakout lead single "Stuck."

Although her singing bursts with youthful exuberance, Stacie is more conscious and articulate than most of her peers ? and this time out, she was determined to challenge herself to be even more honest as a songwriter, while also pushing her hook-laden pop in new musical directions. The edgier R&B grooves of Stacie Orrico, which features contributions from hitmakers Dallas Austin (Pink, TLC), the Underdogs (Tyrese) and Virgin CEO Matt Serletic (Santana, matchbox twenty, Aerosmith) reflects just how much she's grown up in the two years since Genuine.

"I definitely wanted the music to be more aggressive," she emphasizes. "All of my influences are very soulful musicians ? my favorite artist is Lauryn Hill, and I've always loved Whitney Houston and Ella Fitzgerald ? and I wanted to explore that direction more." As a singer, Stacie is as poised and persuasive as her jazz and R&B idols, as is evidenced by her confident reading of the Diane Warren-penned ballad "I Promise."

Stacie Orrico continues to showcase the frank yet responsible lyrical approach that Stacie's established fans expect from her. "I'm a teenager, living a similar life that most seventeen-year-old girls are," says Stacie. "So whether it's from a positive perspective, or a questioning one, I want to sing about the things I'm dealing with, and worry or wonder about: Growing up, and guys, and family." Stacie isn't afraid to write lyrics that tackle tougher topics, too; though a pop song, "Hesitation" finds her ruminating over the notion of life after death.

Her infectious first single, "Stuck," is an immediately arresting example of her ability to address sentiments that resonant with a diverse array of listeners. "So many people, especially young girls, get into relationships where they're not being treated very well," says Stacie. "But they end up staying in them, because they find security in having a boyfriend, and maybe haven't seen what a good relationship is like. So you end up feeling emotionally torn, or stuck, which is where that whole I hate you, but I love you/I can't stop thinking of you part comes in."

Although music was part of family life in the Orrico household, and Stacie sang at church and in school, she never intended to pursue a career in entertainment. "I had always loved to sing," she admits. "But I was not raised in a showbiz home, and my parents are the farthest thing from stage parents."

In 1998, at the age of twelve, Stacie was discovered singing in a talent contest she'd entered on a lark; an A&R exec judging the event snapped her up as soon as she won first prize. Two years later, her debut, Genuine, entered the Billboard Heatseekers chart at #1. Her performances in support of the rapidly-selling release caught the attention of Destiny's Child, who asked her to be their opening act for a string of U.S. dates in 2001.

"They taught me a lot," says Stacie of the time she spent warming up for Beyonc?, Michelle, and Kelly. "I had the privilege of touring with them at one of the highest points in their career. And there they were, on top of the world, yet I would watch them still take time to talk to the fans, and listen to people, and never act jaded."

With the release of the lively, polished Stacie Orrico, this vital new voice introduces her vibrant musicianship and sophisticated performance chops to the world at large. It was fate that Stacie became a professional entertainer, and fate that brought her to Virgin records, but now she has a mission, one that is simple, direct, and a far more ambitious than the dreams of ordinary seventeen-year olds. "I want to impact people's lives with my music," Stacie insists. "People of all ages, from all walks of life. If I can accomplish that, just by sharing some of my experiences, then my goal will be attained."

Snow Patrol

From www.snowpatrol.net Biography...

"Whenever we go anywhere new, we're like kids in a huge empty house. We want explore all these big spaces, climb into the attic and rake among boxes and get down into the basement and find the stuff that has been stashed away. For us the world could never be too big.." Gary Lightbody

The same no frills sense of adventure informs Final Straw, Snow Patrol's third album. Already established as a heart-crushing mix of distorted British pedal rock and US alternative guitar pop on home soil, the album sees the band grow up, fill out and with some aplomb, make one of the best British records you'll hear this year.

But success hasn't come easily and the Snow Patrol back-story began way back at Dundee University in 1994 when Lightbody bumped into guitarist, Mark McClelland. "Our eyes met across the crowded dance floor," says Lightbody. "I knew he was the one for me. We clicked musically and we liked the same bands, so we thought 'Why not start one of our own?' That was the beginning of Snow Patrol."

Well, not quite. The first band name picked out by the duo was Polar Bear, a title also being used by ex-Jane's Addiction bassist, Eric Avery. When the threat of a lawsuit loomed, Lightbody and McClelland had a rethink and went for the equally wintry Snow Patrol. Still they had the last laugh and after signing to Scotland's Jeepster records (home to Belle and Sebastian, among others), the three piece, now with drummer Jonny Quinn in place, released their cheekily-titled debut, Songs For Polar Bears in 1998.

The trio's far-ranging influences bled through on the album which was later hailed by critics as an infectious pop punk racket with a distorted, amp-popping twist. "Basically our favourite bands were poured into it and at the time we were under the influence of American rock - the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, Soundgarden - but we were listening to My Bloody Valentine and the first Super Furry Animals album too."

Another album, When It's All Over We Still Have To Clear Up, followed in 2001, but by now the relationship between the band and Jeepster was fraying - a parting of the ways was imminent. "It happened at a strange time," says Lightbody. "Everybody was into garage rock and there was talk of changing our name to 'The' something."

As the anxiety eased, the band decided to stick with their original title (Lightbody: "The last thing we wanted to do was to change the name and carry on playing Snow Patrol songs") and began writing Final Straw. In the meantime, Lightbody recorded an album with his solo project The Reindeer Section, which also included such Scottish luminaries as Idlewild, Arab Strap and Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub.

Their self-belief soon paid off and, with demos for The Final Straw in circulation, the band were quickly snapped up by Polydor imprint, Fiction and dropped into the studio with techno lynchpin, Garret Lee, aka Jacknife Lee. By now they had picked up an extra guitarist too, former HMV worker, Nathan Connolly. Having been introduced to the band, Connolly was door stepped until he reluctantly agreed to join. "My mum thought I was being kidnapped by rock stars," he sighs.

The resulting album has proved to be Snow Patrol's most head-spinning work to date - a swooping attack of distorted guitar, fizzing drum beats and woozy pop anthems laced with enough heartache to fill an ocean. And with the themes of lost love and the very real horror of the Iraqi conflict influencing Lightbody's lyrics, The Final Straw is raw emotion made flesh.

"I think it's the first time I've written about something other than my own problems," says Lightbody. "It was a really scary time and that war impacted on the album. There's still the theme of relationships on there too, but there's always been that on Snow Patrol albums. I never write about the nice bits where the relationship starts, it's always about when the chaos kicks in at the end."

Final Straw is hair-tingling stuff. Received to wide ranging critical acclaim upon its release last year, its impact was almost immediate. Both singles, Spitting Games and Run were championed by Radio One. The band, meanwhile, picked up some notable admirers and last year, beardy prog-rockers, Grandaddy took them on a sold out UK tour.

But with a new year comes a new challenge. An NME Brats show occurs in January, before the release of 'Run' on Jan 26th. It has already been hailed as a classic, and as talk turns to levels of ubiquity, the band are set to embark on their first US tour where big things are already expected. "It's flattering to know that much is expected of us," says Lightbody. "We just haven't thought about obtaining that level of success, but that's not to say we're not prepared for it, because we are. I just hope that at the end of the day I can still pop down to the supermarket to pick up my milk. I don't want to get too much hassle when all I really want is a brew."

Snow Patrol have spent the latter part of 2005 and early 2006 in studio recording their new album 'Eye's Open' which is due for release on May 1st, a week after releasing their new single 'You're All I Have' on April 24th. Snow Patrol expects their latest album to be even more electrifying than their previous album which scored the charts in 2004 (Final Straw) with a different line-up after McCleland left the band in March 2005, featuring their new bassist Paul Wilson. The eskimo's continue to impress us all...

Snoop Dogg

No other rapper has been able to carve such a distinct niche in hip hop's diverse and expansive history as Snoop Dogg. His flow is like a Southern breeze on a lazy Sunday afternoon - soothing in its feel, sturdy in its power. We've all witnessed the curly-headed, lyrical phenomenon from 21st Street in Long Beach evolve and fortify into a grown man, now just as concerned with his business as he is with his lyrics - his game as healthy and expanding as his straightened head of hair.

The Doggfather is now bringing his collection of classics to arenas across America as a headliner on Dr. Dre's "Up in Smoke 2000" tour. Snoop will join Tray Deee and Goldie Loc of his newly formed group Tha Eastsidaz, Eminem, Warren G, Xzibit, Nate Dogg, Kurupt, Ice Cube, Mack 10, WC, and others on a tentative 39-city, seven-week tour to show audiences across the nation how the West coast rocks.

His set includes joints from his upcoming No Limit/Priority Records album, Tha Last Meal, due in stores this fall and featuring production from Dr. Dre, Battlecat, Meech Wells, Timbaland, Jellyroll, Fredwreck and Swizz Beats, and Snoop recently completed shooting his long-awaited New Line cinema produced horror-flick "Bones," set to hit theaters later this year. In perhaps his most rewarding accomplishment, Snoop has started his own label, ---------- Records, which offers its artists 100 percent of their publishing rights. "You won't see that in no record label that I've dealt with," says Snoop. "Me giving it to the artist is something special because I feel like if you write your songs and create that atmosphere, you should be compensated for it." ---------- artists include Tha Eastsidaz, Kokane, Butch Cassidy and a female rap trio, Doggy's Angels. The label also has a film division entitled Snoopadelic Films, another gratifying achievement considering Snoop's personal love of motion pictures. The company's
first release will be "The Eastsidaz," a straight-to-video film featuring himself, Tray Deee and Goldie Loc.

For fans interested in Snoop's long and bumpy path to the present day, Snoop detailed his life story in his autobiography, "Tha Doggfather." Written with Davin Scay, the project required a self-analysis that few people are willing to undertake. "I had to go back to my childhood and the things that made me upset, and made me who Iam," says Snoop. "I also had to expose the bad things about myself that caused me to have that bad reputation when I first came out. But it's all a part of life. I was willing to reveal it and share it with the public."

Between his numerous projects, Snoop manages to squeeze in a weekly radio show at The Beat in Los Angeles that has just picked up national syndication in 14 U.S. markets and counting. His air-shift sizzles with his favorite old-school r&b and hip hop joints, as well as world premiere releases of his own material.

Snoop Dogg has already accomplished what many rap artists will never achieve. The sheer resiliency of his 28-year hustle has made hip hop's own "King of All Media" currently available in record stores, movie theaters, book stores, syndicated radio, and recently in concert, C-walking across a stage near you. Snoop admits his newfound focus on matters other than rhyming was sparked by Master P taught me," says Snoop. "Now I'm taking what he taught me, putting it to use with my personal knowledge and just trying to be the best artist in the game."

Sixpence none the richer

Sixpence None The Richer, named by guitarist Matt Slocum for a phrase summing up an idea in CS Lewis' Mere Christianity, was formed in 1991 by Slocum and Leigh Bingham. The pair had met in 1989 en route to a church youth retreat in their native Texas, and Slocum was enchanted by the 13 year old Bingham's voice.

A demo recording was made in 1991, with the help of TJ Behling (who wrote "Spotlight" and sung the original version) and passed around underground and local magazines. At Illinois' Cornerstone Festival, Slocum was surprised to find their demo held up at a seminar as an example of a good demo. He introduced himself to the speaker, beginning a relationship which resulted in the band signing to US-based independent REX and recording The Fatherless and the Widow with producer Armand Petri. Following this record's release in 1993, the band joined 10,000 Maniacs as support on a short tour. The album has a light feel, showing clear influences from Natalie Merchant and the Sundays among others. It was greeted rapturously by reviewers, including a positive reception in the US music industry journal, Billboard.

It was in 1994 that the band made their first venture abroad, playing at the Greenbelt Festival in Northamptonshire and Holland's Flevo in 1994.

The next release was again on REX. Beautiful Mess saw the band working on more aggressive and complex material, and lyrically continued the melancholy direction they had begun in on their debut. Second guitarist Tess Wiley and bass player JJ Plascenio made their presence felt in the extended instrumental jams.

In 1996 the band returned to Greenbelt without Wiley, but with an EP named Tickets For A Prayer Wheel, supplies of which were soon depleted. The EP contained two versions of a song from _Beautiful Mess_, and a dance remix of another, along with various other oddities.

Not long after the release of Tickets, REX records went bankcrupt and was bought out by Platinum Entertainment. Sixpence, believing that their contracts had been breached in the process began a lengthy legal battle to release themselves from that contract. In the process they met up with maverick singer-songwriter Steve Taylor, who set up a new label, Squint Records, partly in order to distribute a new album from the band.

Sixpence None The Richer, released originally in November 1997 was considerably different from the two releases which had preceded it. Slocum had studied towards a degree in music at the University of Texas some years previously, and his interest in string arrangements was strongly felt across this album. While "Kiss Me" was the obvious radio single, the album is generally much more downbeat, with complex arrangements and recurring lyrical themes.

Just before the album's release, bass player JJ Plascensio decided it was time for him to leave the band (he is now a worship leader at a church in Austin, Texas). Since that date he has been replaced by Justin Cary and the band has once again gained a second guitarist in the form of Sean Kelly. The album was re-released in February 1998, with a few tracks remixed by Bob Clearmountain, a music industry legend whose previous work had included records by Duke Ellington, Bryan Adams, David Bowie, INXS, Simple Minds, Crowded House, Rolling Stones, and Bruce Springsteen. But it was nearly a year before "Kiss Me" began to make a dent in the charts. By early 1999 however, the song was receiving airplay across the USA and beginning to receive attention abroad. The song spent most of May in the Billboard top 5 and also spent June and July at the top of the UK airplay chart.

The album was re-released with the added track "There She Goes" in mid-June. "There She Goes", a cover of a song by the Las (notably covered by the Boo Radleys), is being pushed as a follow-up single, a move which has divided fans. While the song seems to be well received by radio in the USA, many feel it would have been better for the band to release another of their own songs, to exhibit more of Slocum's songwriting and show the public something which is more representative of the band's material. Only time will tell whether it's been a good decision.

Simply Red

The British soul pop band Simply Red was formed in 1984 by singer Mick "Red" Hucknall (born Michael James Hucknall, Jun. 8, 1960, Manchester, England) with three ex-members of Durutti Column, Tony Bowers (b. Oct. 31, 1952) (bass), Chris Joyce (b. Oct. 11, 1957, Manchester, England) (drums), and Tim Kellett (b. July 23, 1964, Knaresborough, England) (brass, keyboards), plus Sylvan Richardson (guitar) and Fritz McIntyre (b. Sep. 2, 1956, Birmingham, England) (keyboards).

The group signed to Elektra Records and released Picture Book (October 1985), which featured "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)," a Top 40 cover of a 1982 R&B chart single by the Valentine Brothers, and "Holding Back the Years," a Hucknall original that topped the U.S. charts, caused the album to go platinum, and made the group one of the major successes of 1986. Men and Women (March 1987), which featured two collaborations between Hucknall and soul songwriter Lamont Dozier, was less popular, though it generated the Top 40 hit "The Right Thing." (In the U.K., "Infidelity" and a cover of Cole Porter's "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye" also made the Top 40.) Richardson left in 1987 and was replaced by guitarist Aziz Ibrahim, who was replaced by Heitor T.P. (b. Brazil).

The third album, A New Flame (February 1989), went gold due to the cover of the 1972 Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes hit "If You Don't Know Me by Now" that hit number one and became a gold single. (In the U.K., "It's Only Love" and "A New Flame" also made the Top 40.) By the time of the fourth album, Stars (September 1991), Bowers and Joyce had left, with Shaun Ward joining on bass and Gota on drums, and saxophonist Ian Kirkham had become a permanent member. Stars was a relative commercial disappointment in the U.S. (though it spawned Top 40 hits in "Something Got Me Started" and "Stars" and eventually went gold), but it became a major success elsewhere, especially in the U.K., where it was the best-selling album of 1991, topped the charts for 19 weeks, and spawned the Top Ten hits "Stars" and "For Your Babies" and the Top 40 hits "Something Got Me Started," "Thrill Me," and "Your Mirror." Worldwide, it had sold 8.5 million copies by the second quarter of 1993.

Ward and Gota were gone by the release of Simply Red's fifth album, Life
(October 1995), leaving a lineup of Hucknall, McIntyre, Heitor T.P., irkham, and backup singer Dee Johnson. The album again proved more of a success at home than in America, topping charts all over Europe, as did its lead-off single, "Fairground," while spending only three months in the U.S. charts. In 1996 they released "Greatest Hits" and Blue followed in 1998, and a year later Simply Red issued Live at the Lyceum.

In 1999 Simply Red released "Love and the Russian Winter" and they made a world tour called "the Spirit of Life Tour".

Simply Red's album It's Only Love was released in 2000.

After three years, Simply Red release their last album called "Home" and a new greatest hits album called "The very best of Simply Red" which contains 37 songs.

Simple plan

Simple plan consists of five members:
Pierre Bouvier- Lead vocals
Charles Comeau AKA Chuck- Drums
Jeff Stinco- Lead guitar
David Desrosiers-Bass and back vocals
Sebastian Lefebvre AKA Seb- Guitar and back vocals

These five amazingly good looking guys come out of good old Montreal Canada!! Jeff, Chuck, Seb, and Pierre all went to the same Highschool. They eventually formed a band, but they needed a new bassist. At the time, Pierre was doing vocals and playing bass, but wanted to just sing. So they recruited Dave from a band called Reset (Ironically Chuck and Pierre's old band). Together they formed Simple Plan.

Simple Plan is a pop/punk band and their inspirational music always gets you hyped and ready to party. They have accomplished so much in such little time, that the only way to go from here is up.
Good luck in the futur guys!

Simon Webbe

Fresh from the massive success of his debut solo single ‘Lay Your Hands’, Simon Webbe finally unleashes his highly anticipated debut solo album ‘Sanctuary’, released on 14th November, through Innocent Records.

At only 26 years old, Simon has already gained more experience in the music industry than many artists attain in a lifetime. As a member of Blue he has achieved phenomenal sales figures not only in the UK, but all across the globe. Blue have had an amazing forty No.1 singles worldwide, selling over 9.5 million albums and 3.5 million singles.

As a solo artist, Simon’s debut single ‘Lay Your Hands’ stormed into the UK charts at No.4 this August and remained in the Top 10 for an amazing three weeks, garnering massive radio airplay in the process. Now with the single ‘No Worries’, and his debut solo album ‘Sanctuary’, Simon‘s position as one of the UK’s leading singer/songwriters will be established once and for all.

But how did Simon reach such dizzy heights?

He pinpoints his childhood church experiences as a major influence on his musical journey. As a boy, Simon’s mother would take him to church four times a week. Here Simon would sing along to gospel songs and learn the harmonies. Unsurprisingly, at the age of eight Simon announced to his mother that he wanted to be an entertainer, letting her know, “I’m gonna do well in whatever I do!”. A keen drama student at school, Simon took part in many productions as a young actor, even winning the lead in several performances.

Music was always played in the Webbe family home, and Simon grew up to the soulful sounds of acts such as Bill Withers, Bob Marley and various gospel acts. As Simon says: “I grew up listening to music, writing songs and singing to myself. I’ve always had passion for singing and song writing”.

However, as Simon grew into his early teens, it became clear that his first love was football. His heart was set on becoming a professional footballer, and he spent every spare second practising and honing his skills. A natural talent, Simon was signed to the Port Vale “School Of Excellence” for four years from the age 14. After completing his training, his playing skills were scouted by both Liverpool and Aston Villa and a successful pro-football career beckoned. However, disaster struck at the age of 17 when Simon suffered a torn ligament during a match, with the injury preventing him from ever playing professionally.

It was after this injury that Simon’s single mindedness to succeed came into play. If he wasn’t going to make it as a professional footballer, then he decided he had to succeed in another career. His attention again turned to the entertainment industry.

Simon began auditioning as a singer and rapper for various bands and music projects, all the while writing songs for future use. In 1998, at the age of 19, Simon was spotted by a model scout and put forward for the prestigious Pride Magazine’s “Face of the Year” competition. Simon’s good looks and distinctive features won the competition and a modelling contract.

Offers of work around the Manchester area flooded in, but although he had taken the first steps to a successful modeling career, Simon still had a hunger to be a singer and performer. Continuing to hit the audition circuit he met Duncan James, Lee Ryan and Antony Costa, Blue were formed and an incredible rollercoaster of success began.

Signed to one of the UK’s leading labels, Innocent Records in 2000, the band Blue released their debut single ‘All Rise’ in May 2001. From the moment this uplifting track hit the airwaves it was clear that Blue had something special, a certain X factor. Suddenly it was OK to like pop again no matter how old you were. The next year saw the band achieve a meteoric rise to fame, becoming the hottest new act to emerge from the UK in years.

Blue gave Simon the chance to develop his natural song writing talents and explore his production ideas. Simon was the key songwriter on many of Blue’s biggest hits including ‘All Rise’, ‘Fly By’ and ‘One Love’. In fact Simon either wrote or co-wrote six tracks on their first multi platinum album ‘All Rise’ and even more tracks on the two albums that followed ‘One Love’ and ‘Guilty’.

For Simon, song writing is a non stop project. He says: “I always carry a Dictaphone with me in case ideas strike whilst I’m on the road. A melody or lyrical idea can hit you at any time and you have to be prepared!”

2005 has seen Simon sign a solo deal with Innocent Records, with the company allowing him to grow and develop his own sound organically. Simon has been involved in the song writing and production of his debut album every step of the way. “I had a very definite idea of what I wanted the record to sound like. I think it has surprised everyone, including my record company!”

His debut solo album ‘Sanctuary’ showcases a new Simon Webbe, a softer, more soulful singer with thoughtful lyrics and beautiful melodies. Each of the twelve diverse tracks perfectly showcases Simon’s smooth vocal talents, highlighting a new maturity to his voice.

As Simon explains; “I didn’t want to produce a UK r&b record. You’ve got Usher and Mario and they’re doing r&b, and doing it very, very well. I chose not to go down that route as I wanted to create my own sound. It’s all about the melody. I call my sound “urban folk”. It’s a mixture of soulful vocals, urban beats and acoustic guitars.”

Simon has spent the last nine months working on the material, creating an exceptional first album that will appeal to pop, r&b and country fans alike. “Sanctuary” is a confident collection of twelve perfect pop songs that is sure to establish Simon as one of the most exciting artists on the current music scene. Opening with the massive hit single ‘Lay Your Hands’, and straight into the infectious new single “No Worries”, the album moves from the smooth acoustic groove of ‘After All This Time’ to the soulful and uplifting ‘A Little High’, through the country funk of ‘Unjustified’, on to the sweeping beauty of ballad ‘Free’ and the indelible melody of “Sanctuary”, finishing with the Caribbean influenced ‘Star’.

At the heart of every track is a killer song, with Simon taking the co-writing duties on all of the tracks. As Simon explains, the album explores a diverse range of lyrical themes. “’No Worries’ is about making life changing decisions and getting closer to the ideal life we all strive for. ‘After All This Time’ is about a strong lady who holds down a household, but has a husband who thinks he’s 17 when he’s really 60. They’re a couple who’ve been through thick and thin and back again, they still love each other, after all this time. ‘A Little High’ tells of a marriage that goes stale. It’s about rediscovering why you fell in love in the first place and getting that initial magic back.”

Simon adds: “The single “Lay Your Hands” was inspired by the Bill Withers track ‘Grandma’s Hands’. I love the sentiment of that track. “Lay Your Hands” is about life in general, about me being a man and asking for help. You immediately feel better when someone gives you a hug and lays their hands on you”.

However, despite recording such heartfelt musical material, Simon is not afraid to say he’s scared at the prospect of becoming a solo artist after five years of being in a band with his best mates. “I’m used to seeing three other faces on stage and in the studio. It’s all about me now, and only I can let myself down. I’m very nervous. It’s a nice responsibility though.”

In addition to his musical career, Simon is also pursuing his talents as an actor. He has to date filmed two movies, both due for release in early 2006. In ‘The Truth About Love’, Simon stars opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt, ironically as a professional footballer. The movie has already been a No.1 Box Office hit in Asia. The second film is UK Brit Flick ‘Rolling With The Nines’, a underworld drama which sees Simon star alongside Jason Statham, Vas Blackwood and Billy Murray.

Outside his music career, Simon is also a loving father to his eight year old daughter. Simon says: “Being a parent is a massive responsibility and one I take very seriously. Everything I do, I do for my daughter and she knows that.”

Simon also owns a Manchester based modelling agency, ‘Industry People’ and runs a production company, ‘UK Team’ responsible for developing UK urban artists.

With the release of ‘Lay Your Hands’, Simon undeniably established himself as major player in the UK and overseas charts. Now, with the release of a new single “No Worries” on November 7th and the album “Sanctuary” on November 12th, he is truly a solo superstar in the making.

Shania Twain

The Shania Twain story has opened on a new and exciting chapter, and the only way is UP! That's the title of the much anticipated follow-up to Come On Over, the most successful female solo artist album of all time with world-wide sales of an astonishing 34 million.

Follow that? You bet. The great news for Shania fans across the globe is that she's completed one of the most exciting and ambitious recording projects of the new millennium. Not to mention that she's totally energised by a fresh creative momentum that has led to her completing a spectacular new record, co-written with her husband and producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange.Refreshed and ready to rock after a sabbatical at home in Switzerland in which she and Mutt became parents for the first time, there's a buzz coming from Shania like an electrical charge. "We wanted to put something together that was bigger and better," she glows, "and the whole thing IS so much bigger and better than anything I've done in the past.

"The whole record has been made differently, we travelled around a lot more, we used musical influences from all over the world. We used Indian musicians recorded directly in Mumbai, India, some of the American musicians were recorded in the Caribbean, a 40 piece orchestra recorded in Ireland, other musicians in Italy, and we literally hopped from city to city song-writing, including Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Rome, Provence and The Grenadine Islands. This music came together in smaller pieces over a longer period of time."

Leading the way as the first single from this extraordinary new project is the absolutely irresistible I'm Gonna Getcha Good! "That was an obvious single," she says. "There is a typical Shania attitude in the lyric, a definite female confidence. It's all about a girl who knows what she wants, she not only knows how to get it, but she's going to get it good.

"In my experience it's more typical to run into guys with such confidence when it comes to women, once again I thought it would be fun to write with that same confidence, but from a woman's point of view. I wanted the first single to reflect that playful attitude, because I want people to relate to the Shania they already know, at the same time as hearing a new, fresh sound."Shania is thrilled with the development of her vocal technique on the album, an evolution that Mutt wholeheartedly encouraged. "It is different. Mutt was able to bring out a presence in my voice that I usually only use when I'm song-writing with my acoustic guitar. I didn't realise that I was singing with a slightly different voice on the microphone. It's like being in front of a camera, unless you forgot it's there, you kind of act a little differently. Mutt stayed on it until he got the natural, more intimate vocal sound he loves
in my voice."Other highlights on the album? Shania could name as many as there are tracks, but here are a few particulars. "Ka-Ching! is one of my top five, probably one of my top three, because it does have the Shania cheekiness to it, but I think it's a pretty fair observation of where we're at, in terms of how commercial society has become, almost globally."
"I also like the lyrics on In My Car (I'll Be The Driver) - 'don't care if you sleep with your socks on, you can hurt my head with your favourite rock song.' In other words, you can be in control of all the other things in our lives, but in my car, I am the driver! UP!, the title track, has some really fun things, 'even my skin is acting weird, wish that I could grow a beard'.

One of my other favourites is I'm Jealous, it's one of those songs that's so descriptive, you can see and feel it happening. Juanita is a song I got a bit deeper with lyrically. In our most vulnerable times, whether we're searching for strength, courage or freedom, it's our female power (our Juanita) that we need to connect with.""It's keeping it real lyrically, that's just my approach, it is very conversational which is very much the way the last two albums were written and those were the songs people related to the best, saying things the way I would have spoken them."Shania plans to start pre-production for a new tour early in 2003, eager to make the same personal connection with her fans that produced such sensationally successful results on the Come On Over world tour. "I have a lot of fun with the touring, it's the biggest reward," she says. "I can see on their faces what the songs mean to them. I'm affected by music, when I sit and listen I'm high by it, so when I see I'm affecting them the same way
, I really feel I've done what I came to do."Meanwhile, is one of the biggest-selling recording artists in the world feeling the pressure of following a 34 million-seller? In short, no. "I don't have any anxiety about the success of this record. My goal isn't to outsell Come On Over. I just really want to know what people think of it. I'm excited to get the feedback."

That's why, even with her place in the world's musical lite guaranteed and undisputed, the only way is UP! for Shania Twain, because of the creative goals she has already achieved with the album even before it starts flying out of the stores. "Mutt and I as a team put more into this record than ever before," she confesses. "We really have gone totally all out, we've laboured over it and I'm completely thrilled with the results." "I put this music on and I'm overwhelmed with emotion. It's been such a labour of love, and as I'm listening back sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry."

Thanks to Crystal Clear Water the summer beloved for submitting the biography.

Shakira

BORN: February 2, 1977

Shakira, the graceful one, has been sneaking up on you-the Grammys, the MTV Video Awards, those Pepsi spots. She's a child prodigy who wrote her first song at age eight, a blond-locked Colombian who speaks three languages and loves only in Spanish. She's a perfectionist who spends hours in the studio; she needs to be close to nature but her passion is the crackle of electric guitars. She is in the blush of youth, but she's far older than her 24 years. As her countryman, Nobel Prize winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote, "Shakira's music has a personal stamp that doesn't look like anyone else's and no one can sing or dance like her, at whatever age, with such an innocent sensuality, one that seems to be of her own invention."

The swift ascent of Shakira's star is the stuff of Latin American legend. At the age of 13, she signed her first recording contract with Sony Music Colombia and released her first album Magia. (Magic). After graduating from secondary school, Shakira decided to dedicate her life to the music, recording Peligro ("Danger") and Pies Descalzos, ("Barefeet") in the years that followed, which broke her in Latin America , Brazil (over one million sales) and Spain.

Her next album, ?D?nde Est?n Los Ladrones? produced by Shakira and executive produced by Emilio Estefan, established her as the major force behind Latin pop-rock, going multi-platinum in the U.S., Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Central America, Mexico and platinum in Spain. Then came a Grammy and two Latin Grammys, the key TV appearances, the brave new world of Shakira, the star. Shakira is a walking, living, breathing, singing contradiction. "I was born and raised in Colombia, but I listened to bands like Led Zeppelin, the Cure, the Police, the Beatles and Nirvana," said Shakira. "I was so in love with that rock sound but at the same time because my father is of l00% Lebanese descent, I am devoted to Arabic tastes and sounds. Somehow I'm a fusion of all of those passions and my music is a fusion of elements that I can make coexist in the same place, in one song."

It's the songs that make her new album, LAUNDRY SERVICE, her first with English-language tunes, the kind of breakthrough work that will turn the pop world on its head. From the tango-inflected "Objection (Tango)," to the Middle Eastern flavor of "Eyes Like Yours," to the lyrical innovations of "Underneath Your Clothes", to the richness of the melodies of "The One," to the pop-rock of "Whenever Wherever," Shakira will stand in the ranks of the best singer-songwriters in any language.

"I think I am celebrating life more than ever," said Shakira. "I had a slightly narrow vision of love. Now I am feeling unguarded, and it feels great. I feel washed clean of the way I looked at things in the past, which is why I am calling the album LAUNDRY SERVICE."

The most extraordinary thing about LAUNDRY SERVICE is the way she was able to translate her Latin American sensibility into a new language. The idea to do songs in English first came up during Shakira's partnership with Emilio and Gloria Estefan. Gloria initiated the process by translating "Ojos As?," a song that appeared on Shakira's last album, D?nde Est?n Los Ladrones? (Where are the Thieves?). "I wanted to have her involved in this somehow because she was one of the people that really believed that I could make a record in English," said Shakira.

But nurturing the belief that she could write songs in English was a strong challenge. "The first song I wrote by myself for this record was "Objection," remembered Shakira. "I prayed and asked God to send me a good song today, and I remember I started writing the song a couple of hours after. I wrote the music and lyrics at the same time, and when that happens it's really magical to me." When she completed "Objection," she knew that she could write ten more, so she packed up her loved ones and set up portable studios in rural Uruguay. Taking in the primordial energy of natural surroundings, Shakira came up with a crop of new songs more introspective, more passionate than any she had written before. "I had to find a way to express my ideas and my feelings, my day to day stories in English. So I bought a couple of rhyming dictionaries, read poetry, and authors like Leonard Cohen and Walt Whitman," she said.

"I would feel love in Spanish but I would think about how to express that love in English. Afterwards that became such a natural process, and if you check the subject of my songs, most of them talk about my own experiences and feelings and what I was actually going through in my life," said Shakira. "Is impossible not to write about love.. It's the great mystery of life. It makes me ask myself new questions every day."

Shakira is one of the poetic songwriters of her generation and considered the best female lyricist in Latin America: On the ballad "Underneath Your Clothes," she claims as territory a man she likens to "a song written by the hands of God"; on the blues-rocker "Fool" her "tears make a sea of desert." But she is still as quirky around the edges as she's always been-on "Ready for the Good Times" she remembers close encounters with roaches; on "Poem to a Horse" she scolds a friend dulled by "hydroponic pot," and on "The One," she rewards her true love by shaving her legs and learning how to cook.

"I try to represent only myself, but there are many women that identify with me," said Shakira. "I am definitely not a woman who washes her husband's clothes every day. I hope I don't sound like a feminist leader saying these things. I just try to be honest the way I write."

There's no doubt that Shakira has maintained her creative integrity with her new project. But perhaps more importantly, LAUNDRY SERVICE is a record that reflects her deep love for the basics of rock production. "I felt that I needed to make an organic record with real players in the studio playing live music and doing it like they made records 30 years ago, in the old times," said Shakira. "We used an engineer named Terry Manning, who's worked with ACDC, Led Zeppelin, Lenny Kravitz. He's somebody from the old school. I was determined not to depend on too many electronic sounds, and he definitely understood that."

On LAUNDRY SERVICE there is a very strong dedication to old-fashioned rock riffs, to the soulful, bluesy singing styles of a Bonnie Raitt, even the mournful, wailing guitars of Aerosmith. But Shakira can't help being herself, and that means that "Whenever Wherever," will bounce along with some help from Andean pan flutes and Brazilian drums, and "Eyes Like Yours" bursts from your CD player with navel-baring, belly-dancing furor. And for those longing for Shakira in her original language, four new tracks in Spanish are included. "The world has become so small and music is so eclectic now, and our taste is so broad that that's almost predictable that all this crossover from one culture to another was going to happen," she said, then paused for a second, making sure everyone knew she had her priorities straight. "But I know that rock and roll is never going to die."

Sean Paul

Ever since his impressive single debut "Baby Girl" in the spring of 1996 for producer Jeremy Harding on the 2 Hard Records label, Sean Paul has captured the eyes and ears of the Dancehall community as "...the one to watch". Born to a Portuguese-Jamaican father and a Chinese-Jamaican mother, Sean Paul Henriques grew up known to his friends as the "copper- color Chiney bwoy...", excelling in sports in his teen years. Sean played water polo for the Jamaica National team as well as representing his country in swimming in the 1989 and 1991 Carifta Games. However his love for the arts was fostered at an earlier age by his mother, a well noted Jamaican painter. "When I was 13 years old , my mother got me this little thirty dollar keyboard. I remember thinking that this was all I needed to make dancehall riddims!" Nonetheless, it wasn't until 1993 that the then aspiring dancehall DJ from St. Andrew got his introduction to the music business through musicians Carrot Jarret, Cat Coore and Bunny Rugs from Third World, as well as producers Rupert Bent and Paul Castick.

"I am very grateful to those musicians for giving me my first exposure to the business. But I wasn't really feeling the direction they were going in. Dancehall was really the right avenue for me to express myself, to get people to hear me out about how I saw the world". With a style and voice reminiscent of the great Super Cat, the 26 year old DJ also credits Major Worries, Shabba Ranks, Lt. Stitchie and Papa San as heavy musical influences. After a string of hits such as "Infiltrate" and "Hackle Mi" for producer Jeremy Harding , "Nah get no Bly (One More Try)" for producer Donavon Germain, and "Deport Them" and "Excite Me" for producer Tony Kelly, Sean Paul is currently enjoying the success of "Hot Gal Today" with Mr. Vegas on producers Steely and Clevie's "Streetsweeper" riddim. Sean also appears on the cut "Here Comes the Boom" with Mr.Vegas and rap artiste DMX on the soundtrack to video director Hype Williams' debut film "Belly" on Def Jam Records.

With his debut album for VP Records on the way this fall, Sean Paul says despite his achievements, he still feels like a rookie. "I'm still working on my career, still trying to learn from other artistes and develop my skills and my style. The world still hasn't seen the best of Sean Paul." The DJ has appeared on most of the major music festivals including Sting, Reggae Sunsplash, Reggae Sumfest and Reggae SuperJam, as well as showcases in Great Britain , the Caribbean, and numerous US club and arena venues. Sean has also started his own record label, Bassline Records, to sharpen his production chops and make a greater impact on the reggae industry.

"Not enough time is put into the full production of Dancehall. The talent is there, but we have to look at the rest of the world as a marketplace as well, not just Jamaica. People should stop just trying to make a quick buck and develop the music. Then reggae can move forward again." Sean Paul standing tall...

Sean Kingston

After producing an endless array of hit records for the likes of musical heavyweights such as 50 Cent, The Game, Rihanna and Snoop Dogg, production savant J.R. Rotem has turned his attention to one of the most innovative young talents in music, Sean Kingston, the first signing on his Beluga Heights label.

Kingston, a 17 year old native of Jamaica who now lives in Miami brings his very unique triple threat of talent of rapping, reggae chatting and soulful harmonization with the 2007 release of his debut yet to be titled album.

"As an artist, my whole goal is to make powerful and classic music," Sean divulges. "I want everyone to feel me and understand where I'm from and that's what this album will do. The music is all about an authentic Sean Kingston vibe. JR is a talented dude and a dope producer and he saw that I had something different than any other artist out there. Together we're a powerful force.

In addition to J.R., The Runners, Cool and Dre, DJ Felli Fell, and DJ Khaled will be supplying beats. In just a short time, Kingston has already done what few in his age bracket can accomplish - solidify a following in the streets and get people excited about music again.

He has two certified thunder knockers on his hands with "Colors 2007" and the Jamaican remix. The original version is a lyrical brouhaha with Kingston showing he can hang with the acclaimed guest MCs. Miami Mayor Rick Ross and the multi-platinum west coast superstar, The Game. The reggae remix of Colors is a Caribbean hailstorm featuring the legendary Vybez Cartel and the always profound Kardinal Offishall. Both records maintain the same theme of unity and self-reflection.

"That's the whole campaign," Kingston, whose parents are from Jamaica, elaborated. "The song is about representing every flag that you're loyal to - whether it is Jamaica, the States, your block etc. It's a lifestyle record that can be a street anthem no matter where you are. I couldn't ask for anybody better than The Game and Ross to join me on the track. The Reggae version came up because I knew I had to do one special for Jamaica. The first person I thought of was Vybez Cartel. His verse came out crazy. Then Kardinal Official, that's my homie, he really attacked the track."

Kingston's album is shaping up to be as diverse as the colors are on the different flags he talks about.

The melody of "Stand By Me," also acted a muse for the first official single off the album "Beautiful Girls." It is way more than puppy love when Sean lays his vocals on the record, singing about a shattering break up.

"You're way too beautiful girl," he sings about heartbreak. "Girls will have you suicidal when they say it's over."

"I heard the track 'Stand By Me,' one night in the studio, the radio was on. "I asked J.R., did anybody ever flip that? He made the beat the beat right there on the spot and I wrote the songs in a few minutes. It's hard when you're in love and a girl tells you that it is time to end things. I know everyone can relate to that, so that's why I had to write about it."

"Drummer Boy" finds Kingston sticking mainly to rapping over the trouncing pounce of drums, while "I Can Feel" takes it to the party and incorporates a sample of Phil Collins' timeless "In the Air Tonight."

Perhaps one of the most eye opening track however may the song "Prosecutor," where Kingston vents about what he calls the wrongful imprisonment of his sister and mother. "You're lying and there's no way to prove it," he fumes.

Sean says he was inspired to write the record after he saw his family incarcerated when he was just 14 years old.

"I always had my sister and my brother," he began to explain. "My brother was doing his own thing, he was there but he was running around doing his own thing. When my mother and sister went away, it took a lot out of me. My sister went away for four months and my mom been away for over a year. When she went way, I was like 'nah man, this is too much.' I was only 14. I missed her like crazy but I pulled through and used it as my motivation. "Prosecutor" is a defining song on the album for me - nothing fake about it because it touches on something very personal to me. The dope melody that's on there makes me feel even closer to it."

Kingston wants to make it clear that he is no cookie cutter artist that has the songs laid out for him. He comes up with 100 percent of his lyrics.

"Man, it feels good to get that creative freedom," he says. "Not a lot of artists are put in that position. I don't feel that just because I'm a young dude, somebody should write my songs and say 'ok spit it this way.' I think music is better when it comes from the person, when it comes from your heart. I feel comfortable writing my own music and them letting me do it, is a great situation.

Sean talks about J.R. more like a big brother, rather than an Executive Producer of his album. Couple of years ago, Kingston started randomly hitting music industry contacts on MySpace. Although none of the A&R reps responded, Rotem emailed him back. J.R. almost had no choice, "Sean would hit me up at least three times a day!" J.R. says.

"He just had a real distinct sound," Rotem remembers. "I worked with some of the best and I don't see why Sean can't grow to be one of them. His potential is limitless."

Rotem invited Sean for a meeting in Los Angeles, coincidentally; the young performer was already in the process of moving to California. Shortly after their initial meeting, Rotem had a flagship artist for his Epic records joint venture, Beluga Heights. For Sean, it was almost like a prophecy beginning to be fulfilled. Not only is music his love, it is in his blood. Iconic Reggae artist Buju Banton is his uncle and Jack Ruby, who produced records for Bob Marley and Burning Spear in Jamaica, is his grandfather. Now Kingston says he's looking forward to making music and living out his dream.

"In the future I want to have my own label and work on the business side," he said. "I went to acting school when I was younger, so I want to get into that. I want to get into every aspect of the business. It took me a little while to develop and build my sound, to find out who the real Sean Kingston was. I didn't know if I wanted to harmonize, or to rap. But I found out that I can do it all."

Scissor Sisters

Pop music has exploded in an edgy, sexy, supremely tuneful commotion thanks to the uncommonly brilliant sounds of the Scissor Sisters.

Creative sparks first ignited five years ago, when a then 19-year-old explosion of energy called Jake Shears was introduced to a multi-instrumentalist who goes by the title of Babydaddy. Fired up by a passion for solid songwriting and off-the-wall humour, they joined forces to write hook-studded tunes, adopted NYC as their home and agreed on a cheeky name that’s caused confusion and provoked many blushes in turn. “None of us are lesbians, though” says Scissor Sisters, helpfully.

Sex, inevitably, plays a significant part in the music. After all, Jake discovered a knack for performance during his stint as a go-go dancer, to raise funds for a European college trip. “I’m so grateful that I went through that phase of dancing on bars for dollars!” he says. “It made me totally unashamed to go crazy. Once you’ve taken your clothes off in front of hundreds of people, things get a lot easier.”

Shameless? Absolutely, and infectiously essential, too. Scissor Sisters bring together rollicking guitar riffs, throbbing synths and a whole bunch of wicked lyrics. Their influences skitter through glimmers of vintage Bowie, Roxy Music, and Elton john to Giorgio Moroder, burlesque theatre and rock opera. At college, Jake had majored in Fiction Writing and numbers like the catch glam rockin’ groove of the their major-label single ‘Laura’ (I gotta give myself one more chance/To be the man that I know I am) weave feature-length stories through song. Sometimes, it sounds like they’re partying hard on cheap champagne; at other points, the moods are downtempo, and beautifully, surprisingly wistful: radio-friendly soundtracks for the morning after.

Music this sparky calls for suckerpunch live presence to match, and before they were honing their studio skills, Scissor sisters were whipping up a storm with their shows: on home turf at first, and more recently extending to Europe (in Barcelona not long ago, one impressed spectator described them as ‘a life-changing experience’).

It was on the New York live circuit that the original duo teamed up with a third full-time Scissor Sister: performance artist Ana Matronic. “She’s tough, amazing, glamorous…” the boys enthuse. The hostess of a decadent cabaret show in the Lower East Side who’d learned her magic on the San Francisco scene (“At 20, I realized I’m a drag queen stuck in a woman’s body!” she laughs) she first met Jake at a Halloween party, where she’d dressed as a Warhol Factory reject, and he was in the guise of, erm ‘a back-alley abortion’. She recalls: “We both took one look at each other and thought” “hey you’re cool!”

Scissor Sisters actually made their live debut appearance at Ana’s club in late 2001, and now the stately lady is a fixture at their dates (where the trio are joined by charismatic friends Del Marquis on guitar and Patrick Seacor on drums), and lends her own crisp tones to record. Ana neatly sums up the outfit’s stance: “What we do is about people displaying their fantasies on the outside, trying to break out of the every day, and look like their dreams.”

There’s no denying that they’ve encouraged a great deal of audience interaction too, which has already included a 75-year-old fan at one show. “when it’s 430am and you’ve got grandma on stage partying with you, you know something works” laughs Jake.

It’s little wonder that The Village Voice lauded Scissor Sisters as ‘a rock unti who aren’t afraid to play disco; another surefire highlight of their repertoire has them reworking Pink Floyd’s prog rock rehab classic ‘Comfortably Numb’ into a full-blown bootylicious anthem, with Jake skillfully providing Bee-Gees styled vocals (“I’ve always loved singing in falsetto”) and a ‘Frankie Says Relax’ retro twist. Perhaps the fusion shouldn’t work, but the genuinely make the song their own, with massive glitterball panache.

“I don’t think we’re afraid to play anything” adds Jake. “Pop should be meaningful again. It shouldn’t be a dirty word. We’re not making fun of anything we do and there’s no way we’re going to sound manufactured. Our songs are accessible enough to break through barriers. Actually, we’ve been meaning to write some country music…” Before they go down that particular road for real (anything’s possible, as Jake regards songwriting as ‘divine intervention.), Babydaddy points out “Of course we love the dancefloor, but a nice m?lange of influences is always going to take you someplace new. From the very beginning we were saying: “Let’s make this large than life.”

And so it is. With three unmistakably individual and attitude-packed New Yorkers at the core (Jake: “ I would have never got together with this group of people in any other place”; “Babydaddy: ”We do what we want without compromising”), Scissor Sisters’ mission to inject fun and frisson back into culture has just gotta be big. Cutting edge has never sounded more irresistibly decadent.

Savage Garden

Australian pop duo Savage Garden formed in Brisbane at the end of 1996, their name inspired by fantasy author Anne Rice's term for the savage and isolated world of vampires. Within nine months of formation they had attained two domestic hit singles ("I Want You" and "Halfway To The Moon"). This achievement came without the benefit of any live performances or even promotional interviews. Their sudden popularity became a global phenomenon when "I Want You", officially the biggest-selling Australian single of 1996, became an international bestseller later in the year.

The duo, singer Darren Hayes and multi-instrumentalist Englishman Daniel Jones, met while playing in bar bands in Queensland in 1994. However, they elected to form a band more suited to their personal tastes - an amalgamation of influences including XTC and Peter Gabriel. A demo was sent to veteran manager John Woodruff (associated with Australian success stories including the Angels, Baby Animals and Diesel). He immediately signed them to his JDM record label.

Their self-titled debut album was recorded in Sydney in June 1996, with Hoodoo Gurus and Air Supply producer Charles Fischer at the helm. "I Want You" climbed to US number 4 in May 1997, and they enjoyed a huge transatlantic hit during the early months of 1998 with "Truly Madly Deeply", the single topping the US charts and spending several weeks in the UK Top 10. On the back of their singles success, Savage Garden rose to number 3 on the US album chart in April. The follow-up single, "To The Moon And Back", peaked at US number 24 in August 1998, but climbed to number 3 in the UK chart. The song had originally stalled at number 55 in February. The duo's follow-up, Affirmation, was recorded in the luxurious studios of San Francisco, and included the huge US chart-topper, "I Knew I Loved You".

Sarah Connor

In the spring of 2001, with her debut single Let's Get Back To Bed-Boy!, Sarah Connor hit the bulls-eye. By the side of US star TQ she jumped immediately to Number 2 in the German Single Charts, reached Top Ten ranking in countries all over Europe, and made the number 15 spot in the European Top 100. After just a few weeks, Gold Records in Germany and Austria followed, and the music channel VIVA awarded her a Comet in the category of National Newcomer.

Just a few months later, with From Sarah with Love, the then-21 year old recording artist took success to another level. The single enjoyed Number One status in the German Single Charts for a whole week, and after only a few days hit Gold, not stopping until it reached sales of over 750,000, earning Triple Gold status. In Austria and Switzerland as well, the single scored Gold and Platinum records, respectively.

The first album, Green Eyed Soul, continued the tradition of success by going right to Number 3 in the German charts, hitting Gold after a week, not stopping until it achieved Triple Gold Status with 450,000 CDs sold, peaking proudly at Number 2.

Little wonder that Europe-wide success for Sarah wasn't long in coming: in Finland, Greece, Poland, Austria, Belgium, Portugal and the Netherlands, Sarah Connor charted in the Top 10, and took either Gold or Platinum honors.

In the summer of 2002, the Echo-Award-Winner (category: Female National Rock/Pop Artist) realized a life-long dream, mounting a major Tour and playing to sold-out venues across the country.

Whoever assumed that this Gemini would need to take a breather after all this amazing success would have been mistaken: with her friend and idol Wyclef Jean, Sarah went into the recording studio and after only one night created the appropriately-titled One Nite Stand (Of Wolves and Sheep), a hot track which Wyclef not only wrote and produced for Sarah, but sang on with her as well.

One Nite Stand (Of Wolves and Sheep) was the first release off Sarah's second album Unbelievable, and reached Gold status in Germany in an unbelievable 48 hours.

In the middle of 2003, Sarah surprised her fans with very special news: she was pregnant! Before taking her Maternity Leave, however, Sarah had her second Number One Hit in Germany with Music Is The Key, a track with the New York a cappella band Naturally Seven. Her next conquest was reaching the pole position in the charts with her first DVD, A Night To Remember-Pop Meets Classic!
In November 2003 Sarah released her third album, Key To my Soul, which imitated its predecessor and went immediately Gold in Germany, entering the charts in the Top 10.

As wonderful as all this musical success has been for Sarah, the greatest joy in her life came in Florida, on the 2nd of February, 2004…for it was on this day that Sarah's son Tyler was born.

Santana

FORMED: 1966, San Francisco, CA

The origins of SANTANA lie in a chance meeting in San Francisco between Carlos Santana and keyboardist Gregg Rolie in 1966. Towards the end of that year the two musicians formed the Santana Blues Band together with Tim Frazer on guitar, Gus Rodrigues on bass, Rod Harper on drums and Michael Carabello on congas. Carabello provided the third element in what was, in barely three years, to become the band SANTANA.

The Santana Blues Band began to attract a following to their version of Chicago blues from the very beginning. ***As the band developed the percussive conga it also became more evident as did the Latin influence of Carlos Santana who had been born in Mexico and absorbed a multitude of salsa and jazz influences together with the legendary bluesman along the way.

However the personnel began to change as quickly as the band was developing. By the middle of 1967 the mark tow version was back to the nucleus of Carlos Santana and Gregg Rolie with both Bob Livingstone on drums, Marcus Malone on percussion and David Brown on bass the latter of whom was to become the fourth element in SANTANA.

During 1968 the band was spotted by Bill Graham who was promoting the Fillmore West where the band initially played as the opening act. Such was the reaction that their reputation began to grow apace with Bill Graham eventually becoming their co-manager. In parallel with the success of the band came the recognition of Carlos Santana as a virtuoso guitarist the result of which was an invitation for him to play on the first super session album released as ‘The Live Adventures of Al Kooper...’

As 1969 progressed the Santana Blues Band developed into a mark three version with Carlos Santana and Gregg Rolie augmented by Michael Shrieve on drums, the returning Michael Carabello on congas, Chepito areas as trombalist-percussionist, Alberto Gianquinto on guitar and Rico Reyes on vocals. Both Alberto Guianquinto an Rico Reyes were to feature later in the SANTANA story with the former being credited with the arrangements on the first album ‘Santana’ and as the pianist on ‘Incident At Neshabur’ which was included on their second recording which was the acclaimed ‘Abraxas’ album.

(It is interesting to note that the original sleeve for the album credits the recording as taking place at the Pacific Recording Studios as were both the first album ‘Santana’ and the original recordings on this collection. This fact, together with the performance of Gianquinto on piano suggests that the track was either a surplus track from the album ‘Santana’ or possibly one of the original ‘demonstration’ recordings. If the latter were the case it could be deduced that this particular track did not feature the official SANTANA at the time of the release of ‘ABRAXAS’ but rather the mark three version of the SANTANA BLUES BAND as listed above.) Rico Reyes was also credited on ‘Abraxas’ as providing the vocals on the classic ‘Oye Como Va; and with vocals, percussion and the arrangement (along with Areas and Carabello) on ‘El Nicoya’.

1969 was, of course, the year of the breakthrough by SANTANA following their appearance at the Woodstock Festival in New York State where they received a standing ovation for ‘soul sacrifice’ and which became the earliest composition to closely identified with the band.

History does not relate exactly when the SANTANA BLUES BAND became SANTANA. Highly relevant to this collection is the fact that the band were to make the first studio recording of ‘Soul Sacrifice’ along with eleven other compositions included here at the time and, most probably, following their appearance at Woodstock. This more was, in itself, highly unusual and may well have resulted from the influence of Bill Graham as co-manager. Be that as it may the band went into Pacific Recording Studios in San Mateo, California and both laid down a piece of recording history as well as providing the impetus for an extraordinary recording career. For these studio recordings the band was Carlos Santana on guitar, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Michael Shrieve on drums, Chepito Areas on percussion, Michael Carabello on congas and David Brown on bass and can justifiably be called the first line-up of SANTANA.

These recordings, which also included the original versions of ‘Persuasion’ and ‘Jingo’ and could easily be judged to be finished masters, became the auditions tapes from which CBS was to sign the band and launch them on their way to international success. At this point we might say the rest is history but also available from this seminal time are four fascinating tracks recorded at an audition that resulted in Neil Schon joining the band on guitar, a position that he held until 1972 when he and Rolie formed Journey.

The session involved Gregg Rolie on Keyboards and vocals, David Brown on bass and Michael Shrieve on drums and perhaps most vividly illustrates the move from the blues band period to the highly distinctive latin sound of SANTANA. Whilst two of the tracks consist of little more that a jam session as the musicians got to know each other both ‘Travellin’ Blues’ and ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ hark back to the roots of the SANTANA BLUES BAND. This double compact disc places all of the original SANTANA recordings into context for the first time. Their historical importance is beyond doubt and, after a quarter of a century, have at last been given the prominence they deserve.
