Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani was born in Orange County, California on October 3, 1969. As she was growing up she was strongly influenced by "ska" and "punk" music. She grew up with her Mom, Dad, two brothers(Eric, and Todd), and one sister, Jill.

When Gwen graduated from high school she attented "Cal State Fullerton College".

Her band "No Doubt" was started by her brother Eric Stefani, and a friend of his John Spence in 1987. Gwen joined later on as lead singer. Even later, Tony, Adrian, and Tom joined the band. They released their first album "No Doubt" in 1992. Their second album "The Beacon Street Collection" was later released. Then in 1995 they released their most popular album, "Tragic Kingdom" which topped the charts all over Canada and the US.

Eric Stefani, Gwen's brother left the band after the release of Tragic Kingdom to persue a career of his own and was replaced by Phil Jordan and Gabe McNair who went on tour with the band.

Gwen used to date bass player in the band Tony Kanal. When they broke up she wrote the hit single "Don't Speak" in memory of their relationship. She wears a necklace with the letter "G" on it representing her boyfriend Gavin Rosedale's initial.

Gwen is often looked at in the wrong way. "I think I've been able to fool a lot of people because I know I'm a dork. I'm a geek."-Quotes Gwen

In 2000, the band released Return of Saturn. The CD was loaded with tons of new sound, great lyrics, and ofcourse what all No Doubt fans want...Gwen! The album was definately a step up from their previous release, the songs were more mature, and the music had grown. The album was a great release and holds it's own against their most popular release, Tragic Kingdom.

It is obvious that Gwen and her band No Doubt have a lot of talent and we will just have to wait and see what the band holds in store for us next album.

Green Day

Childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong (guitar,lead vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass, vocals; born Michael Pritchard) formed their first band 'Sweet Children' when they were 14 years old in Rodeo, California. By 1989, the group had added drummer John Kiftmeyer (aka: Al Sobrante) and changed their name to Green Day after one of their songs. That year, the band independently released their first EP, 1,000 Hours, which was well received in the punk scene. The band soon signed to local independent label, Lookout! Records (run by Larry Livermore) and their debut album "39/Smooth" was also released that year. Shortly after its release, Kiftmeyer announced that he was going to college and suggested his former drum tutor Tre Cool (born Frank Edwin Wright, III) to take over as the band's permanent drummer(vocals too). Throughout the early '90s, Green Day continued to cultivate a cult following, which only gained strength with the release of their sophomore album, 1992's 'Kerplunk'.

The underground success of 'Kerplunk' led to a wave of interest from the major record labels. Eventually the band decided to sign with Reprise Records and their major label debut 'Dookie' was released in the spring of 1994. Thanks to relentless touring and somewhat surprising MTV support for initial single "Longview," Dookie became a mainstream hit. The album continued to gain momentum throughout the summer, with the second single "Basket Case" spending five weeks on the top of the American modern rock charts. At the end of the summer, the band stole the show at Woodstock '94, which helped the sales of Dookie increase. By the time the fourth single "When I Come Around" began its seven-week stay at number one in the modern rock charts in early 1995, Dookie had sold over five million copies in the US alone. Eventually this figure would top eight million records sold in America, and selling over eleven million copies internationally. Along with Dookie's commercial success, the band also received critical acclaim when they won the 1994 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance.

Green Day quickly followed Dookie with 'Insomniac' in the fall of 1995. Prior to the album's release they again hit number one again on the U.S. modern rock charts with "J.A.R.," (a tribute to their friend Jason Andrew Relva, which appears on the soundtrack to the film 'Angus'). 'Insomniac' performed well initially, entering the US charts at number two and selling over two million copies by the spring of 1996. However, none of the subsequent singles -- including the radio favourite 'Brain Stew/Jaded' -- were as popular as those from Dookie. In the spring of 1996, Green Day abruptly cancelled a European tour, claiming exhaustion. Following the cancellation, the band spent the rest of the year resting and writing new material. The end result is what many call the best album of their career: 'Nimrod'.

'Nimrod' was well received by fans and critics alike, managing to land at #10 on the Billboard charts having sold 80,000 copies in it's first week. However, Green Day's comeback single "Hitchin' A Ride" only made it to #5 on the modern rock charts despite being placed in heavy rotation on MuchMusic and MTV. In response to this the band released what is arguably their most successful single ever. Although it would not make it to number one in the mainstream charts (it's highest position was #2), "Time of Your Life" is now probably the most well known song Green Day have ever written. Featuring Billie Joe on acoustic guitar & vocals, and Petra Hayden (of That Dog) on violin, "Time Of Your Life" became the song to play in any remotely sad situation. The song was even used on the last ever episode of the hit TV show Seinfeld (the most watched finale in the history of TV). Along with Seinfeld, the song was also played during two different episodes of hit drama E.R, making it possibly the most heard song that year on television. Despite gaining the band more critical respect than they would have received with another Dookie or Insomniac, 'Nimrod' only sold about two million copies, and was seen as a commercial flop in comparison. During the 'Nimrod' era the band also vastly improved their live show and even one "Best Live Performance" at the Kerrang awards.

After nearly two years out of the media spotlight Green Day returned in late 1999 to play Neil Young's "Bridge School Benefit Concert", their first live acoustic performance. Green Day began recording their follow-up to "Nimrod" shortly after, which would eventually become "Warning:". Early in the recording process, the band decided to fire producer Scott Litt, and produce the album themselves. This would be the first time since "Kerplunk" that anyone other than Rob Cavallo had produced the band. After they finished recording, Green Day decided to do something else they hadn't done before and headlined the 2000 Vans Warped Tour. Green Day played an amazing set and brought more fans to the tour than any other year in Warped's history (their Toronto performance alone attracted 7,000 more fans than they had any other year).

Released in the fall of 2000, "Warning:" was by far Green Day's most ambitious album to date and first single "Minority" sat at the top of the Billboard Modern Rock Chart after just four weeks. Although "Warning:" contained some of the band's best songs to date (in particular the excellent third single "Waiting"), many fans didn't take too well to the band's new punk-folk sound. Although it has since been certified platinum sales status, "Warning" is arguably Green Day's least successful album. After "Warning:" the band released a greatest hits album entitled 'International Super Hits' and a b-sides compilation called "Shenanigans" as well as their first DVD 'International Supervideos" which chronicles the band's music videos thus far. The band subsequently embarked on a huge 'Greatest Hits' world tour which lead to many people believing the end was nigh for Green Day seeing as most bands only release a "Greatest Hits" albums near the end of their career.

However, these rumours soon died down when after another long hiatus the band announced that a new album was in the works. "What's It Going To Sound Like?" people wondered from all over the Green Day community. "Is it going to be another 'Warning' or are they going to go back to their Punk Rock roots?". Those questions have recently been answered with the explosive new single "American Idiot" which incidentally is also the title track to the new album. For the first time in Green Day's history, Billie Joe has let loose some great politically motivated lyrics and from what we have heard of this album already it looks like Green Day might have made the best album of their career!

In 2005, Green Day toured in England. The tour was called "Bullet in a Bible". Green Day rocked over 300,000 people. Green Day got the name "Bullet in a Bible" from a bible in a war museum that had a bullet stuck in it.

Green Day has released a single called "Working Class Hero". The song also has a video.

Good Charlotte

Good Charlotte's frontmen, identical twins Joel and Benji Madden, were born on March 11, 1979 to a middle class family in Waldorf, Maryland. Their mother raised them with a strict Christian up-bringing. Their father left the family when the twins were 16 years old, causing financial problems for the twins, their mother, older brother, and younger sister. For a short period of time the twins had to work as shampoo boys in a salon. Benji and Joel cite their older brother Josh Madden for introducing them to rock music by bands such as Rancid and Social Distortion. After attending a Beastie Boys concert at the age of 16, Benji and Joel decided to start their very own band, although Joel had never sung before, and Benji had never played guitar. The first band they started was called "The Benji, Joel, and Brian Band,' which they started with a friend. The band was short lived. They then started Good Charlotte in 1995 when they recruited childhood friends Paul Thomas (bass) and Aaron Escolopio (drums). They soon moved to Annapolis, Maryland where they were introduced to Billy Martin by a friend.

After releasing an EP, entitled Another EP, in 1999, Good Charlotte released their first self-titled album in 2000, which was not a huge commercial success. Singles that were released from that album include "Little Things" and "Motivation Proclamation," and "Festival Song".

Aaron was the drummer in their debut album, Good Charlotte, before leaving the band in early 2001 to join the band Wakefield with his brother, Ryan. He was replaced with Dusty, who was just a temporary drummer, who had left the band before the recording of their second album, The Young & the Hopeless. As a result, veteran professional studio drummer Josh Freese plays for that album.

2002's The Young And The Hopeless was much more popular, and marked the bands emergence into mainstream music. The single that made them famous, titled "Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous", topped charts around the globe. Singles that followed from that album included "The Anthem" ,"Girls and Boys", "Hold On" and "The Young and The Hopeless". "The Young and the Hopeless" received a 3x-platinum certification from the RIAA, landing the band on Saturday Night Live, the covers of Rolling Stone and Alternative Press, a two page feature in the New York Times, and spots on CNN and The Today Show. Good Charlotte were also hugely popular on MTV, where the Madden Brothers once served as hosts on the late night music video show "All Things Rock." Their music videos were favorites on both MTV and MTV2, with "The Anthem" going on to receive the "Viewers Choice Award" on MTV's 2003 Video Music Awards.

Chris Wilson was the band's drummer for their third album, The Chronicles of Life and Death, which was released in 2004. The singles released from that album include "Predictable", "I Just Wanna Live", "We Believe" and "The Chronicles of Life and Death". This album was considered a departure from their previous 2 albums. In May 2005, Chris left the band for personal health reasons[1].

Today, through non-stop touring and wide publicity, Good Charlotte has built a huge fanbase amoung young people around the world.

Their most recent "Noise to the World Tour" with Simple Plan featured Dean Butterworth, who has previously played with Morrissey, as the band's current temporary drummer.

Girls Aloud

2002

The Girls Aloud phenomenon began right back in the summer of 2002 when ITV launched Popstars: The Rivals in order to find a girl group and a boy band who would compete for the Christmas number one.

Hit producer Pete Waterman, ex-Spice Girl Geri Halliwell and Westlife manager Louis Walsh were recruited as judges, whilst Davina McCall became the shows main presenter.

In a matter of weeks, thousands of young hopefuls auditioned to become part of one of the two groups. Unfortunately, only 100 could be taken to the next round of auditions, meaning many contestants' dreams came crashing down very early on. However, the ones that did make it continued to impress their way through dancing and singing rounds until just 10 remained and them public took control. But before then two of the female finalists were replaced. Hazel was too old for the show, whilst Nicola Ward refused to sign the contract and walked out. And it's a good thing they did, because that gave Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh a chance to impress the voters.

One by one the final ten of each gender where voted off the show until two bands were formed - One True Voice (23rd November 2002) and Girls Aloud (30th November 2002). And then the race for #1 was on! The male "vocal harmony group" were favourites to take the crown...that was, until the public heard the singles. Girls Aloud's fresh, exciting sound managed to gain them far more support and they stormed straight to the top spot, never looking back. 'Sound of The Underground' sold over 40,000 more than the release from One True Voice and stayed at #1 for four weeks, selling over half a million copies in total.

Because of their success, Girls Aloud became the first female group to debut at number one in the UK and the first band to go to Christmas number one with their first single. With only three weeks between forming and charting they also hold the record for shortest time between formation and hitting the top spot. And they've only had one single!


2003

A four month gap followed their initial success whilst label Polydor Records and manager Louis Walsh found their next single. 'If You Wanna Roll' was the first idea, but this was ditched due to connections with a previous Popstars act. Then it seemed certain that 'Cant Stop Rockin' (now 'Mars Attack') would be the second single. Then 'No Good Advice' landed in the office and the record company immediately saw its potential. Following a break at Christmas the band members all moved into the same apartment block in London, so they were all close by just like in the Popstars house. Also at the beginning of the year there was the toilet incident involving Cheryl, which many speculated could see the end of Girls Aloud. Luckily, this was not the case as Polydor and her bandmates were behind her 100%. Then, there was the cancellation of the Popstars tour, which also put the bands popularity into question. However, nothing was going to stop these fiesty ladies from becoming Britains favourite girl group.

In May 2003, 'No Good Advice' went to #2 in the charts and become one of the years most talked about hit's. A critically acclaimed #2 followed shortly after and confirmed that Girls Aloud were here to stay. Not long after that, 'Life Got Cold' became their 3rd Top 3 single and showed that they were capable of doing slower tracks as well as upbeat pop songs. The girls performed at various summer festivals and gained more support as they prepared for another release in November. Cheryl was ill with a kidney infection for some of the events, but returned in October to film the groups next promotional video. Before that, the singer was cleared of racially aggravated assault but charged with common assault and had to take part in 120 hours of community service. Once again, newspapers were certain the group would loose fans. But they proved them wrong yet again by securing another #2 single with their cover of 'Jump' which appeared on the Love Actually soundtrack!

By the end of their first year as a band, Girls Aloud had officially become one of sexiest, most successful girl bands in Britain and winners of a Disney Channel Kid's Award! Their album went platinum and their singles were entering charts throughout Europe. They took a well deserved break over Christmas before heading back into the studio at the start of 2004, to begin work on the second studio album.


2004

It was not until late May of that year that fans were treated to the first play of Girls Aloud's electric 5th single, 'The Show.' Having toned up and been given a brand new look, the girls shot back into the limelight and into the Top 3, as the notched up another #2! Oh, and they picked up a Glamour Award for Band of The Year.

Once again they hit the road, performing at universities and summer gigs ensuring everybody knew the Girls Aloud were back. Sadly, towards the end of July Nadine's family suffered two sudden bereavements and she returned home to Ireland to be with her family. Being a strong person, Nadine was back with the band after two weeks and promotion for the 6th single began almost immediately.

'Love Machine' is unlike any of the girls previous releases and once again shocked the public just as 'Sound of the Underground' and 'No Good Advice' had previously. After a mixed reception the public grew to love the track at it became their 6th consecutive Top 3 hit by going straight to #2. This meant that only the Spice Girls had performed better with their first 6 releases!

As fans awaited the release of their eagerly anticipated 2nd album, it was revealed that Girls Aloud had been chosen to sing 2004's Children In Need single - fighting off the likes of Busted and Geri Halliwell. Rumours quickly circulated that 'The Power of Love' would be the 7th release, only for it to be revealed that the actual track was to be a cover version of The Pretenders' hit 'Ill Stand By You.' Yet again there were worries about whether they could pull it off...and it turns out they could! The girls filmed a stunning video on a mock beach to go with the ballad and promotion began soon after.

Nadine's family suffered another loss in the early stages of promotion, and Nicola unfortunately lost an uncle not long after this. But the girls battled on, singing live on almost every TV show they appeared on - silencing critics who said they couldn't cut it live. An MTV special saw them perform Jump, Love Machine, The Show and Sound Of The Underground live as well, leaving fans gagging for a tour.

Even more excitement brewed as tracks from 'What Will The Neighbours Say?' began to leak with Wake Me Up, Here We Go and Graffiti My Soul gaining great praise and confirming that the edge was definately still there! But before the album hit the shelves, I'll Stand By You got its release. On the Tuesday after its release fans stood by for midweek positions to be revealed and, to their delight, Girls Aloud were heading straight for the top spot. After a phenomenal performance on Children In Need sales boomed and on the Sunday it was announced that Girls Aloud had scored their second number one single after almost two years - selling almost 30,000 more copies than any other release that week!

A few days later, the girls second album hit the stores. It became the weeks highest new entry on the album charts, reaching #6 and and selling twice as many copies as their debut, 'Sound Of The Underground.' Sales continued to grow and the album was certified platinum in under three weeks, selling well over 300,000 copies! The unbelievable success of 'What Wll The Neighbours Say?' led Polydor to announce Girls Alouds first ever UK Tour.


2005

Having performed at the Royal Variety Performance in December to end a extremely successful year, Girls Aloud started 2005 with a bang, being nominated for Best Pop Act at The Brit Awards - one of biggest events of the year! They also announced the release of their 8th single, Wake Me Up, which was accompanied by a biker video and shot to #4 in the UK Charts.

The biggest event of the year was the sell-out UK tour which saw Girls Aloud perform at 24 locations around Great Britain. Fans and reviewers alike praised the girls for an amazing show each and every night with Love Machine, Teenage Dirtbag and Le Freak being some of the highlights.

After holidays for each of the girls and Cheryl announcing she was getting married to long-term boyfriend, Ashley Cole, they hit the studio to record the third album. The first track, Long Hot Summer, hit the Top 10 in August 2005.

However, it wasn't all good news. Besides Sarah's failed reunion with former lover Mikey Green; Nadine Coyle was also subjected to press attention of her weight. According to reports the girls were ordered to gain weight over fears they had gotten too thin. Not long after, Cheryl angered fans with a comment in Glamour magazine where she said those who had seen the girls more than 5 times may "have something missing in their lives."

During September, tabloids began printing rumours of a split. They had originally reported that several girls were going solo in February and, following mp3's becoming available of Sarah's tracks with Project G, the rumours were reignighted. What they failed to mention was the fact that these songs were actually recorded in 2002, before Sarah even auditioned for Girls Aloud. Stories of a rift in the band combined with the latest single falling quickly out of the Top 20 caused much speculation about how long the band could remain together.

Ignoring the tabloid trash, Nicola and Co announced 2006 Tour Dates and prepared to launch a double assault on the singles charts. 'Biology' was the be released in November with 'See The Day' following just one month later. As the promotional work begun a documentary showing girls with their families and each other reminded long-term fans what attracted them to the girls in the first place.

'Biology' become another big hit for Girls Aloud, storming to #4 in the UK Singles Chart. But it was elsewhere that it's appeal was truly showcased. The single made #1 on the iTunes Most Downloaded list, resulting it Girls Aloud's highest ever placing on the Official Download Chart - #2 behind Madonna. The video also hit #1 on the TV Airplay chart.

The groups 3rd album was already recieving amazing reviews from respected publications such as NME and The Guardian, with TOTP calling it the album of the year. Upon it's release it hit #11 in the albums chart selling just short of 82,000 copies in one week. Like 'What Will The Neighbours Say?' it went platinum just one month after it's release.

Shortly after, 'See The Day' become Girls Aloud's 11th Top 10 single - meaning they broke a record even the Spice Girls didn't manage. Thats right, they ended 2005 as the FIRST EVER all girl group to have 11 consecutive Top 10 singles with their first 11 releases!

Gipsy Kings

Over the years the Gipsy Kings - which hail from the gypsy community in Arles and Montpelier in the south of France - has included singers and guitarists from the Reyes (Canut, Nicolas, Pablo and Patchai) and Baliardo families (Diego, Paco and Tonino). Lead singer Nicolas Reyes is the son of famed Flamenco singer Jos? Reyes, who, with Manitas de Plata, sold millions of records in the 60's and 70's. The vigorous strumming of multiple acoustic guitars and the passionate vocals of the Gipsy Kings have best been defined by critics and fans as an exotic musical hybrid, "rumba flamenca".

There are no other examples of a non-English-speaking band (the group speaks in the Gypsy dialect of Gitane) with such a consistent winning streak in the US, where the group is the biggest-selling French act ever. Ever since the 1987 release of the blockbuster single "Bamboleo," from their platinum-plus debut album, the Gipsy Kings have dominated the World Music charts and sold more than 13 million albums worldwide - more than 3 million in the United States alone. The band captured the #1 spot on Billboard's World Music album chart with the gold certified "BEST OF GIPSY KINGS," which remained on the chart for more than a year.

Albums including the gold-certified "MOSAIQUE," "ALLEGRIA", "ESTE MUNDO", "GIPSY KINGS LIVE", "LOVE & LIBERTÉ," and "TIERRA GITANA" have provided a steady fuel of hits to Billboard's World Music, Latin, and Billboard Top 200 charts. For several years running, the Gipsy Kings have been consistently voted Billboard's #1 World Music Artist and #1 Latin Pop Artist in the magazine's year-end awards. In addition, their song "Sin Ella" from 1991's Este Mundo was chosen by Peter Weir for the soundtrack to his 1993 film, "Fearless."

Two recent PBS specials contribute to the Gipsy Kings' ongoing success story. A documentary, "Tierra Gitana" - which aired on hundreds of public television stations in 1996 - explores the band's roots in gypsy culture and their rich family heritage in flamenco music. Filmed in concert and in the Gypsy camps of Arles, "Tierra Gitana" provides a glimpse at the vanishing lifestyle of a vibrant and traditional people. The hour-long film was released as a home video in December, 1996.
